Lawyers for Good Government (LG), a national network of more than 120,000 environmental lawyers with lawyers in every state, today released its second annual comprehensive state energy report, detailing the progress of energy efficiency efforts in the states. In these states, renewing and developing clean energy technology remains a priority, as evidenced by recent successes in solar installation and wind power development. In fact, clean energy is projected to outpace fossil fuels in electricity production by 2021, according to the report. “The battle to protect our environment from harmful pollution and global warming is a long and painful one,” said John Sullivan, President and Executive Vice-President of the LG. “This annual report is a stark reminder that lawyers are the key people necessary to ensure that our leaders take decisive steps to address the problems facing our world today.”
Lawyers For Good Government
Among the issues covered this year by lawyers for good government and its litigation support arm is a revised version of the Executive Order on Energy, titled “EPA Moves to Reduce the Impacts of Dirty Energy.” The order, according to the lawyers, “clarifies that agencies cannot properly define or regulate energy when that activity may have an adverse impact on a local or national market.” For instance, it would not be appropriate to ban solar panels from all federal buildings, for instance. However, the language of the order makes clear that any regulation or policy that seeks to ban or restrict the use of certain technologies is prohibited, regardless of the cost to such a ban or restriction. This would include any attempts by state or local officials to block construction of solar panels, wind turbines, or other types of clean energy technology.
Another area that was explored in this report was the recently passed USA Freedom Act.
The act, according to lawyers for good government, “establishes guidelines for how to handle lawsuits over immigration issues related to U.S. citizens.” One such guideline is that any lawsuit must be filed within three years. However, there are still instances when a lawsuit can be filed after this limitation, even if it has not been filed within three years. The executive director of the litigation department at the Immigration Clinic, Mark H. Downie, said that the organization has seen a significant increase in the number of requests for assistance from clients who want to file a lawsuit related to the recent actions of the Trump administration. He explained, “litigation lawyers are attempting to fulfill these needs, despite the fact that it may be quite a time before they are able to take up the case.”
It is also possible for lawyers for good government to offer pro Bono services, but the services offered depend on the individual lawyer’s availability and success rate with immigration cases.
Some lawyers may have very strong pro Bono credentials but may have little experience with the specific issues faced by their clients. This is particularly true in cases where the clients’ main issue is fulfilling their right to work in the country legally.
