World Media Group Lawsuit
- by Ayden
In July of 2021, a world media group lawsuit was brought against the Canadian Government for allowing oil spills in the country’s waters. At that time the lawsuits were leveled at the Canadian company Enbridge and the United States based company Exxon. The complaint says that both companies knew about the bad spills, yet they did nothing to stop it.
The lawsuits also say that there was a misrepresentation of the risk factor and potential harm in the situation. Both companies received monetary settlements from the suit. As you might expect, this whole situation has become a matter of hot debate and discussion in the United States and Canada.
World Media Group Lawsuit
This is not the first time such a lawsuit has been brought against an oil spill. In fact, the suits have been brought more frequently than you can count. There are a few different reasons for the increased litigation. First and foremost, environmental groups are very upset at the number of oil spills that have occurred in recent years.
They believe that the lack of oil spills means that companies are less likely to be negligent in the future. As a result, this causes them to press charges when they feel that companies are negligent in treating their oil stocks the way they should.
Secondly, this latest world media story also shows that oil spills can occur in areas outside of the US.
The plaintiffs in this lawsuit claim that Canadian authorities failed to act quickly. Even though the spill affected a large portion of the US, Canadian officials waited for over a month before they responded. The delay enabled more oil to be absorbed into the water and the damage was done. This story just goes to show that no company is completely safe from oil spills.
The next step in this lawsuit is for world media to be deposed and interviewed as part of the litigation.
Any negligence on the part of Canadian officials or Enbridge in this case could lead to serious ramifications for the Canadian company. Whether or not the media coverage in the United States was unfair cannot be determined.
However, this story has touched off broader concerns about the way that media coverage can affect and sway public opinion. The ruling in this case would have a huge impact on how Canadian media deals with issues related to the environment and energy.
The last thing to see about this oil spill is the way that it has galvanized environmental groups against big business interests.
These groups feel that the Canadian company used lax safety standards in their handling of the crude oil and did not respond quickly when the spill was realized. Environmentalists have filed numerous lawsuits against Trans Canada. With the help of world media coverage, these groups have been able to take on larger corporations and win significant settlements against them.
It is unknown whether or not this same media would be willing to support these lawsuits if there was another oil spill in the United States. It appears that environmentalists are using this opportunity to further galvanize opposition to big business and build support for stricter regulations and rules against oil spills.
This is just one of the cases in which Canadian media has made big waves.
Similar lawsuits have also been brought against Enbridge and Kinder Morgan over their handling of the crude oil in their pipelines. It will be interesting to see where this global movement leads, but it is clear that there is plenty of scope for the media to cover natural disasters in future articles and environmental stories.
